According to Today Report, Chen Yanshun, Chairman of BOE, said in an interview that BOE is developing Mini LED technology and Micro LED technology. He thinks that Mini LED technology will see explosive growth in two to three years to come and represents the future direction of the panel industry. Next year, BOE will launch Mini LED backlight products with glass substrates.
Both Mini LED and Micro LED are display technology that uses minuscule LED chip particles as pixel luminous point. However, due to a lack of breakthrough in mass transfer technology for Micro LED, Mini LED with low technical difficulty becomes the focus of market attention.
LEDinside report pointed out that Mini LED will gradually be introduced into industrial applications, and its penetration will speed up. It is estimated that Mini LED will be used in fields including auto panels, mobile phones and large-size panels in 2019. Downstream devices equipped with this technology will reach 80.7 million by 2023, driving the Mini LED market size to $1 billion.
Chen Yanshun said that BOE experienced the severest “cold winter” due to the sluggish LCD sector this year, but the LCD industry will rebound in the first or early second quarter next year. Because of the little development potential of LCD, BOE will stop investing in LCD production lines, and focus resources more on OLED and such fields as emerging Mini LED and Micro LED.
